Romans Road

The "Romans Road" is a way of explaining the gospel using various verses from the book of Romans.

  1. Man is born into sin, and lives in total depravity (3:10-13, 3:23) and rejection of God until He takes us out of that (8:11). Everyone is headed to Hell initially (2:8, 6:23) because everyone disobeys the law that is written on their hearts (1:19-20, 1:21, 2:14-15), and that God has commanded.

    1:19-20
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

    1:21
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

    2:8
but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

    2:14-15
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

    3:10-13
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

    3:23
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

    6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    8:11
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

  2. God sent his son Jesus, to live a perfect life, to die on the cross (5:8) and to take on the wrath of God to pay for the sins of those who believe in him (3:23-25, 3:28, 4:24-25).

    3:23-25
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

    3:28
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

    4:24-25
... It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

    5:8
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  3. All people are commanded to repent of their sins (2:4), believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior (10:9), and follow Jesus, to live as he has taught us to (2:13, 3:28,31, 6:12-14, 12:1-2, 13:10, 13:14, 14:19). It is now our faith in Him that justifies us (4:3), not works of the law.

    2:4
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

    2:13
For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

    3:18,21
For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. ... Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

    4:3
For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”

    6:12-14
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace

    10:9
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

    12:1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

    13:10
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

    13:14
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

    14:19
So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

  4. The result of following Jesus is that he will give us eternal life (5:1, 8:38-39). As he rose from the dead, he will also raise those who believe in him to eternal life (6:4-5). Those who do not follow him are still on their original path to be in Hell for eternity (2:6-8, 6:23).

    2:6-8
He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

    5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    6:4-5
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

    6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    8:38-39
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
