Philippians 1
-
We can see a theme of Philippians from the very beginning of the letter. In verse 1 Paul describes Timothy and himself as "servants of Christ Jesus". In Paul's other letters he describes himself as an apostle. Already in verse 1, we see a theme of humility which we will see plenty of in this chapter. Look at some of Paul's other letters (Romans, 1/2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, 1/2 Thessalonians, 1/2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon) and see if you can find any other similarities or differences in Paul's greetings.
-
From verses 3-8 how does Paul view the Philippians?
-
In verses 9-11, Paul prays that the Philippians would have certain characteristics. What are those characteristics? Are these things what you desire? What in your life shows that you have these characteristics? Or maybe, what in your life shows that you do not have some of these characteristics?
-
From verses 12-14 we see that Paul sees his imprisonment as a means of God to advance the gospel. What situations in your life do you think God is using or can use in the future to advance the gospel? Paul also says in verse 14 that others have become more confident and bold to speak the word without fear? Are you taking the opportunities God is giving you to speak the word without fear?
-
From verses 15-18 describe the two different ways of preaching the gospel that are talked about. Both sides are preaching the true gospel, which is why Paul rejoiced, but what is the difference?
-
Can you think of any way the gospel is preached truthfully today but out of the wrong motivation?
-
In verse 19 when Paul says deliverance, do you think he is talking about being freed from prison (talked about in previous verses), or salvation (talked about next verses), or perhaps both? Either way, how does Paul expect to be delivered?
-
In verses 19-26 Paul is convinced that he will remain alive and on earth in order to encourage the Philippians. Do you think he is right in saying this? Why?
-
From verses 27-30 list the commands Paul gives the Philippians?
-
In verses 28-30 what does Paul say will be the outcomes of living out their life worthy of the gospel of Christ?
