Philippians 4
-
What does Paul mean in verse 1 when he calls his brothers, those whom he loves and longs for, his joy and crown?
-
Euodia and Syntyche and only mentioned here in the Bible. Also, in verse 3, in the ESV, Paul uses the word "companion". The greek word here is only used once in the Bible as well, and can also be translated as "yolk-fellow".
There seems to be some sort of disagreement between Euodia and Syntyche, who does Paul write to specifically in verse 3 and what does he tell them to do?
-
Read the following verses and write a description of the book of life. Exodus 32:30-34, Psalm 69:26-28, Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 17:8, 20:12-15, 21:27.
Why do you think Paul mentions that these people have their names written in the book of life?
-
Paul talks about rejoicing a lot in Philippians. He commands the Philippians to rejoice 3 times (2:17-18, 3:1, 4:4) and mentions it elsewhere (1:18, 2:28). Looking at the context of when Paul tells the Philippians to rejoice, why do you think he continues to tell them to rejoice? What application can you draw from this? How can you apply this to your life today?
-
What does verse 6 say we are supposed to instead of being anxious? What is the result in verse 7?
-
In verse 8 Paul gives a list of adjectives describing things that we should think about. What could some of these things be?
-
In verses 10-13 Paul says that he has learned to be content in all situations, and that he has "learned the secret to facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need". What is this secret that Paul is talking about?
-
From verses 10-19, explain why Paul rejoices that the Philippians have revived their concern for him. What could we be doing today that would be similar actions to that of the Philippians?
-
What do we learn about giving in verses 14-20?
-
What from this chapter stood out to you most as something you want to apply to your own life?
